NANA is a for-profit Alaska Native corporation (ANC) formed as a result of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, which was passed by Congress in 1971.

NANA is owned by the more than 15,000 Iñupiaq shareholders who live in or have roots in northwest Alaska. Iñupiat means real people. Iñupiat have close ties to the land and to each other.

NANA owns the land Red Dog Mine is located on and has an operating agreement with Teck Resources. NANA is also a partner in the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in the Ambler Mining District.
