Attorneys settle accounts in mining history

Miners brought law to Alaska in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - but order came much later, says Bundtzen

Mining, of course, is the oldest profession in Alaska. In the late 19th century the "fancy ladies" followed the miners up to outposts like Juneau and Nome, and then came the lawyers.
