AMA spring mining convention Carlson Center Fairbanks canceled coronoavirus

The Alaska Miners Association spring biennial mining conference that was scheduled to be held at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks at the beginning of April has been cancelled due to concerns over COVID-19.

Alaska Miners Association March 12 announced that due to health risks associated with COVID-19, it is cancelling the AMA spring biennial mining conference that was scheduled to be held in Fairbanks from March 30 through April 4.

"We are deeply disappointed that the event cannot be held as planned. However, the World Health Organization has officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic and the state of Alaska has declared a state of emergency. As an industry that holds health and safety to the highest value, cancelling our mass gathering is the right and prudent decision," AMA penned in a notice announcing the cancellation.

This decision follows reports that at least one attendee of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) annual mining convention held in Toronto, Ontario at the beginning of March tested positive for COVOID-19. Separately, an employee at Kinross Gold Corp.'s Toronto office that did not attend the PDAC convention tested positive for the virus.

More information on the affects COVID-19 are having on the northern mining sector can be found at Coronavirus infects North of 60 mining in this week's edition of North of 60 Mining News.

AMA said its staff will be working over the next few days to distribute detailed information related to the cancellation of the spring convention and provide follow up options to its registrants, vendors, sponsors, and other participants.

"Thank you for your understanding, and please exercise care and caution in the days ahead to take the best of care for your families, friends, and colleagues," the association wrote to its members.
