Australia-based Discovery Africa Ltd. Feb. 22 announced the staking of 308 state mining claims covering gold-silver-copper and tin-silver prospects in Southcentral Alaska.
Known as the Chulitna project, this roughly 46-square-mile land package covers the Partin Creek and Coal Creek prospects about four miles west of the Parks Highway and about 155 miles north of Anchorage. This is just south of Avidian Gold Corp.'s Golden Zone project.
Historical mapping, trenching, and rock chip sampling carried out by the US Bureau of Mines identified two gold-silver-copper target areas at the Partin Creek prospect. Samples collected from one of these prospect areas in 1974 returned grades of up to around 7 grams per metric ton gold and 0.7% copper.
The Coal Creek prospect, which lies about six miles southeast of Partin Creek, is a tin-silver target discovered by Charles Hawley in 1972.
Houston Oil and Minerals drilled 42 holes at Coal Creek in the 1980s. A preliminary resource calculated for Houston in 1982 estimated the drilled portion of the Coal Creek deposit contained roughly 4.8 million metric tons averaging 0.27% tin. Silver and zinc were also encountered during this drilling.
Working with a specialist consultant familiar with Alaska, Discovery Africa conducted a strategic review of various project opportunities.
The strategic Chulitna project area was selected as prospective from the historical work carried out there and the current work being carried out on neighboring properties – Avidian's Golden Zone gold-silver-copper project to the north and Honolulu Prospect Corp's Discovery Creek silver and base metals target about six miles to the east.
Discovery Africa says it engaged expert service providers to conduct the claim staking process and complete all regulatory processes to ensure the successful registration of all the mining claims that comprise Chulitna.
The Aussie exploration company will now prioritize its on-going exploration at Chulitna and is working toward identifying and reviewing other new projects, with a focus on Alaska.
