Kinross Alaska is comprised of the Fort Knox mine and the Manh Choh mine Fort Knox, near Fairbanks, has been operating since 1996 and produced its 9th millionth ounce of gold in 2023. It employs 800 employees, plus on-site contractors. In 2019, Kinross proceeded with the Gilmore life of mine extension project. The Manh Choh mine is a joint venture with Contango and is located on Tetlin tribal land near Tok. The Native Village of Tetlin owns both the surface and subsurface rights. Plans are to start producing gold in 2024 with a focus on local hire and optimizing local businesses. Kinross will truck the high grade ore to Fort Knox for processing, which reduces the environmental footprint by removing the need for a tailings facility.
