    Shane Lasley|Updated Jul 19, 2015

Capstone Mining Corp. July 14 said copper production at its Minto Mine continued to exceed expectations during the second quarter and is now projected to top guidance for annual production. For the quarter ended June 30, Minto produced 4,141 metric tons of copper in concentrate and cathode, nearly identical to first-quarter production. Capstone said ore from Area 118 underground continued to run significantly above model grades and enhanced mining practices resulted in lower... Full story

  • North offers great rocks, some concerns

    Shane Lasley, Mining News|Updated Mar 8, 2015

Alaska and Yukon Territory share more than a 750-mile border in the eyes of the 485 mining executives that participated in Fraser Institute's Survey of Mining Companies 2014. This group of miners, explorers and consultants ranked these northern neighbors as two of the richest mineral jurisdictions on earth but found certain mining policies in each a cause for concern. As a result, Yukon was ninth and Alaska was 10th on the survey's investment attractiveness index, a measure... Full story

    Shane Lasley|Updated Mar 1, 2015

Capstone Mining Corp. Feb. 17 reported that its Minto Mine in Yukon Territory produced 18,411 metric tons of copper in concentrates during 2014 at a C1 cash cost of US$2.33 per pound of payable copper. Surface mining at Minto was suspended at the end of the third quarter 2014 due to delays in receipt of a water use license amendment required for pre-stripping at Minto North. • Mining Explorers 2014: NTL powers Northwest exploration

    Shane Lasley, Mining News|Updated Nov 2, 2014

Mineral and coal exploration in British Columbia, which peaked at C$680 million in 2012, retreated to roughly C$476 million in 2013. This drop is on par with the roughly 30 percent decrease in exploration expenditures worldwide. The dynamics that led to the decrease - tight capital markets that continue to challenge the ability of junior explorers to raise money, senior miners keeping tight reins on exploration spending and softer gold prices - have remained in play during...

  • Mining Explorers 2014: Government funding bolsters exploration

Lara Lewis, Special to Mining Explorers|Updated Nov 2, 2014

In 2014, many junior exploration companies work to preserve capital by undertaking modest exploration programs. The injection of funding into the Yukon Mineral Exploration Program continues to be a valuable source of seed money for prospectors and juniors. The Government of Yukon increased its 2014 program funding to C$1.4 million from C$1.17 million in 2013. Forty-eight placer and hardrock exploration projects received funding in 2014. The program also has increased its limits from C$35,000 to C$50,000 matching dollars per...

  • Yukon mines grapple with big challenges

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Oct 26, 2014

Yukon Territory, lauded in recent years for its mine-friendly business climate, boast three operating mines coming online in the past seven years as well as strong prospects for more than doubling that number by 2020. Yet all three mines have hit rough patches in their operations in 2014 for distinctly different reasons. "It's been a little bit challenging for each of the producing mines this year," observed Robert Holmes, director of the Mineral Resources Branch of Energy, Mines and Resources in the Government of Yukon in...

  • Bokan, Niblack funding bill advances

    Shane Lasley, Mining News|Updated Apr 27, 2014

The Bokan Mountain and Niblack mineral projects are attracting substantial support from Alaska lawmakers. This vote of confidence may result in a financial boost needed to develop the Prince of Wales Island deposits into mines during an otherwise tight financial market. "In southern Southeast (Alaska), we are working on legislation right now to create hundreds of new jobs at Niblack and Bokan," Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell said during an April 10 keynote address at the Arctic Inte... Full story

  • Premier orders review of BC EA process

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Feb 23, 2014

British Columbia Premier Christy Clark ordered a review of the Canadian province's environmental assessment process in January, saying the current system has become too cumbersome. Clark provided few details when she announced the initiative at the Mineral Exploration Roundup in Vancouver Jan. 27. She said environmental reviews of major projects are crucial, and while the current process is rigorous and transparent, the B.C. environmental assessment office can "do better." "In my view, it is better to do the hard and...

  • Merger deal brightens juniors' horizons

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Jan 26, 2014

Striving to mix up a batch of lemonade from the unrelenting string of lemons dished out recently by the chronically depressed capital markets, three junior mining companies with promising assets in Yukon Territory are joining forces to protect those interests and pave the way for continued exploration. Redtail Metals Corp. and Northern Tiger Resources Inc. are merging their interests and acquire the Yukon assets of Americas Bullion Royalty Corp. (formerly Golden Predator Corp.) in a multifaceted transaction that will produce... Full story

  • Mining Explorers 2013: Mining faces global, local challenges

Lee Pigage, Special to Mining Explorers|Updated Nov 3, 2013

In 2013, the mineral industry globally has been buffeted by financial challenges. Development infrastructure has seen major cost increases. Multinational corporations have had major write-downs of assets associated with falling mineral prices. Junior exploration companies have not been able to raise venture capital for funding projects as investors appear to be shying away from what is seen as a risk investment. Yukon was not exempt from these challenges. Most exploration programs were downscaled with emphasis on lower-cost... Full story

  • Mining Explorers 2013: Explorers scale back programs in 2013

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Nov 3, 2013

Asubstantial amount of exploration activity continued apace in Yukon Territory this season despite the truncated budgets that forced most mining companies to juggle their projects and priorities. Some exploration companies found creative ways to raise capital, turning out their pockets to return to Yukon in 2013 to explore for Carlin-style gold mineralization in the east-central region of the territory, for more gold-bearing structures in the White Gold and Klondike districts to the west and for other styles and types of... Full story

    Shane Lasley, Mining News|Updated Oct 27, 2013

From Kotzebue to Ketchikan, Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority is using its financial muscle and its ability to build and operate large infrastructure projects to help mining companies overcome the challenges of developing the often remote mineral riches that the Last Frontier has to offer. "We are working with local communities and mine developers on infrastructure projects throughout Alaska, including port facilities and energy supply," said AIDEA external...

  • Quiet season eclipses hectic activity

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Aug 25, 2013

A substantial amount of mining activity continued apace in Yukon Territory this season even though most mining companies are shying away from the anorexic capital markets. Many exploration companies raised funds in other ways, turning out their pockets to return to Yukon in 2013 to explore for Carlin-style gold mineralization in the east-central region of the territory, for more gold-bearing structures in the White Gold and Klondike districts to the west and for other styles and types of mineralization elsewhere in the territ...

  • Mining incentives may be project savers

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Jul 28, 2013

In the best of times, a government-sponsored mining incentives program could be a wise investment of public revenue to stimulate economic development in a mining-intensive jurisdiction like Yukon Territory. In a sustained capital drought like the one currently scorching the industry, funds awarded through the Yukon Mining Incentives Program can be the deciding factor in whether boots even hit the ground on many mineral exploration projects across the territory. Designed to promote and enhance mineral prospecting and explorati...

  • Early birds take flight in Far North

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Mar 31, 2013

There's nothing like getting an early start, especially when it comes to mining exploration in Canada's Far North. Literally, there's nothing like the 2013 program that Prosperity Goldfields Corp. kicked off in late February at its Kiyuk Lake Project to the east in southern Nunavut nor the 2013 field campaign launched about the same time by Kaminak Gold Corp. at the Coffee Gold Project in Yukon Territory. In a year when many mining companies are having to scrape together enough exploration funds to even mount a field program...

  • Far North producers deliver in 2012

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Feb 24, 2013

While others may have encountered insurmountable challenges, the new producers of precious and base metals in Canada's Far North achieved solid and, in some cases outstanding, performance results in 2012. The Meadowbank Mine in Nunavut and the three operating mines in Yukon Territory - Minto, Bellekeno and Wolverine, that began commercial production in recent years, posted results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2012 as well as guidelines for positive outcomes in 2013. Nunavut gold The Meadowbank Mine is the largest o... Full story

  • BC exploration spending shatters record

    Shane Lasley, Mining News|Updated Feb 24, 2013

VANCOUVER, B.C. - British Columbia, Alaska and Yukon Territory - the headliners of the Association for Mining Exploration British Columbia's 2013 Mineral Exploration Roundup - tallied more than C$1 billion of mineral exploration spending in 2012. This marks the second year running that these neighboring jurisdictions at the northwestern extent of the North American Cordillera topped the C$1 billion mark. But unlike the 2012 Roundup, a year in which explosive exploration... Full story

  • Wellgreen heats up, despite cool market

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Nov 18, 2012

A reporter recently asked Greg Johnson, the newly appointed president and CEO of Prophecy Platinum Corp., if he was committed enough to his new role as head honcho of the company's emerging Wellgreen Project in southwestern Yukon Territory to stick around for five years. Johnson, one of the original architects of NovaGold Resources Inc. which built the world-class Donlin gold deposit in Alaska from a few million ounces into a 30-million-ounce-plus resource, chuckled before he responded. "With the caliber of asset that we have...

The Government of Yukon is committed to providing an internationally competitive investment climate. To this end, we continue to provide regulatory certainty around environmental assessment, permitting and licensing of projects. Yukon's exploration and mining industries are settling in for the long term. After a record-breaking year for claim staking and exploration spending in 2011,...

  • Mining Explorers 2012: Exploration rush slows in 2012

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Nov 11, 2012

While the frenzy of activity that engulfed the Yukon Territory in 2011 did not re-emerge this season, scores of players, from upstart juniors to global mining firms mounted impressive mineral exploration campaigns throughout the territory. Gold was the primary metal sought in the Yukon in 2012, but some explorers chased silver, copper, zinc-lead, iron and other minerals. Based on the spending plans of mining companies in March, Natural Resources Canada projected C$285 million planned spending across the Yukon, a decrease of... Full story

  • Haines offers deep-water port of dreams

Rose Ragsdale, For Mining News|Updated Sep 30, 2012

Haines Borough Manager Mark Earnest is a man on a mission, getting the word out to mining companies in Yukon Territory that the deep-water port in his sleepy Alaska community of 1,811 souls could well be the answer to their prayers. Unlike the Port of Skagway, its increasingly busy neighbor to the northeast, the Port of Haines is virtually devoid of congestion. The port attracts only one cruise-ship a week along with daily ferry service in summer, has very little road traffic thanks to a designated truck route that bypasses...
