Canadian Zinc Corp. Feb. 14 reported that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Northwest Territories Power Corp. to explore the potential of supplying power for the development and operation of the Prairie Creek Mine in the Northwest Territories.

Under the agreement, the companies will assess how Northwest Territories Power could supply both the primary electricity and infrastructure needed to generate and deliver the power.

Additionally, the companies will evaluate the integration of energy alternatives, specifically liquefied natural gas, as part of the energy supply for the mine.

Northwest Territories Power is already investigating the potential of supplying LNG to reduce dependency on diesel power generation in local communities.

Canadian Zinc COO Alan Taylor says the development of LNG facilities in northern British Columbia coupled with natural gas discoveries near infrastructure in Northwest Territories makes the more environmentally sound LNG power supply a potentially viable option for Prairie Creek.

According to a feasibility study completed in 2016, a mine at Prairie Creek is expected to average 86 million pounds of zinc, 82 million lbs of lead, and 1.7 million ounces of silver annually over a 17-year mine life.
