With the addition of Mactung and Gayna River, Fireweed Metals has expanded beyond zinc and silver to critical minerals such as tungsten, gallium, and germanium.

Newly renamed Fireweed Metals Corp. (previously Fireweed Zinc) July 7 announced that a ground gravity survey has begun at its recently staked Gayna River zinc-lead-silver-germanium-gallium project in Northwest Territories, Canada.

After acquiring the adjacent Mactung tungsten project from the NWT government for C$15 million, Fireweed opted to change its name to better define the broader spectrum of resources the company is exploring for.

Prior to the purchase of Mactung, Fireweed had already added the Gayna River project to its portfolio, a base, precious and critical minerals enriched project about 180 kilometers (110 miles) to the north.

"The acquisition of the Gayna River project by staking is a low-cost way for Fireweed to expand our portfolio of critical metals projects and add some exciting exploration potential," said Fireweed Metals CEO Brandon Macdonald in the acquisition announcement. "While our focus remains on our flagship Macmillan Pass project, we are keen to explore Gayna River where we see the potential for high-grade massive sulphide mineralization."

With the addition of the two NWT projects, Fireweed Metals has quickly positioned itself to become a major provider of the minerals and metals necessary for the green transition.

"Back in 2020 when we made a new discovery at Boundary West on our flagship Macmillan Pass project, gravity was a key part of defining the drill target," said MacDonald. "We are building on the experience that we had in using this exploration tool by applying it to a new search space at our recently acquired Gayna River property where we see the potential to make a new discovery of high-grade massive sulphide mineralization."

In addition to the ground gravity geophysical survey, a lidar survey will be flown to create a high-resolution digital elevation model that will aid future exploration on the property.

"We are excited to start early-stage work at Gayna River, advancing it in parallel with our portfolio of critical minerals projects," finished the Fireweed CEO.

To aid this exploration, Fireweed Metals has also been awarded a government grant of C$132,000 from NWT to help fund the exploration program.

And seeing how Northwest Territories is positioning itself to become a frontrunner in the critical minerals race, it's a strategically aimed grant that will aid the Far North region in locking in its place.
